It is the governmental center of county of Madison County. Winterset is part of the Des Moines West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Winterset is positioned at 41 20 9 N 94 0 50 W (41.335901, -94.013981). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 4.72 square miles (12.22 km2), of which, 4.58 square miles (11.86 km2) is territory and 0.14 square miles (0.36 km2) is water. Winterset is positioned about 30 miles southwest of the state capital of Des Moines.

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,190 citizens , 2,062 homeholds, and 1,336 families residing in the city.
