Washington was established in 1839 as the governmental center of county of the newly established Washington County.
As of 2014, the town has jubilated its 175th anniversary, only 5 years behind the earliest town/city in Iowa, Dubuque, Iowa. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 4.92 square miles (12.74 km2), all land. United States Enumeration Bureau.
