Spencer, Iowa Spencer, Iowa Location of Spencer, Iowa Location of Spencer, Iowa Spencer is a town/city in the state of Iowa (United States), and the governmental center of county of Clay County. It is positioned at the confluence of the Little Sioux and Ocheyedan Rivers.

The populace was 11,233 in the 2010 census, a diminish from 11,317 in the 2000 census. Spencer is famous as the home of the Clay County Fair, held annually in September, averaging over 300,000 visitors each year.

The first home was assembled in what is now Spencer in 1866, and the first store was opened in the region in 1869. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 11.18 square miles (28.96 km2), of which, 11.01 square miles (28.52 km2) is territory and 0.17 square miles (0.44 km2) is water. At one point Great Lakes Airlines was headquartered in Summit Township, Clay County, near Spencer. The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 96.0% White, 0.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 1.3% from other competitions, and 1.2% from two or more competitions.

There were 5,018 homeholds of which 27.4% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 3.4% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 40.0% were non-families.

34.7% of all homeholds were made up of individuals and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

23% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 7.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.3% were from 25 to 44; 26.5% were from 45 to 64; and 19.7% were 65 years of age or older.

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 97.57% White, 0.14% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.11% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other competitions, and 0.65% from two or more competitions.

There were 4,842 homeholds out of which 29.3% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 37.8% were non-families.

33.0% of all homeholds were made up of individuals and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

Age spread: 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who were 65 years of age or older.

About 7.3% of families and 9.5% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 13.3% of those under age 18 and 10.0% of those age 65 or over.

Federal government placed Spencer's downtown company precinct on the National Register of Historic Places. Also in 2004, the State Historical Society of Iowa certified the Spencer Downtown Cultural District as one of the initial eight such projects athwart the state.

Spencer's proposal for this designation encompassed remodeling the old Spencer Middle School building into a multi-purpose facility with a senior citizen center, affordable housing units, and a restored facade. Future work on the old Middle School universal involves restoration of the historic auditorium. Also part of the State Historical Society designation is the city's renovation of its Grand Avenue bridge to include commissioned stained glass plates in an Art Deco style. Current cultural attractions in Spencer include the Spencer Community Theater, the Parker Historical Museum, enhance art displays, and the Bogenrief Glass Studio.

The Curiel-Reynolds School of Visual Arts (CRVA) relocated from Detroit to Spencer in 2007. Spencer is the site of the library where Dewey Readmore Books was the cat in residence from January 18, 1988, until November 29, 2006.

The Spencer Municipal Airport is positioned three miles (5 km) northwest of the company precinct of Spencer.

At the height of Great Lake's service, the airline provided non-stop flights to a several locations in the continental United States utilizing Beechcraft 1900 - D and EMB Brasilia airplane .
