The town/city was titled after Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to die on the journey. Sergeant Bluff was incorporated on May 2, 1904. Sergeant Bluff is positioned at 42 24 7 N 96 21 30 W (42.402055, -96.358316). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.11 square miles (5.46 km2), all of it land. The town/city is positioned just south of Sioux City at the edge of the Loess Hills.

The Sioux Gateway Airport (SUX) is adjoining to Sergeant Bluff, on the floodplain of the Missouri River.

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,227 citizens , 1,464 homeholds, and 1,142 families residing in the city.

Much of Sioux City's trade is positioned on the downstream side of Sergeant Bluff.
