The populace was 26,294 at the 2000 census and was 34,768 at the 2010 census, an increase of 32.2%. The town/city is positioned next to Cedar Rapids and part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town was titled after Francis Marion, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

The site was chose in 1839 to be the first governmental center of county of the newly organized Linn County, Iowa.

After years of debate over moving the governmental center of county to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, it was put to a vote in 1919.

Marion is positioned at 42 2 16 N 91 35 35 W (42.037649, 91.592925). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 16.06 square miles (41.60 km2), of which, 16.05 square miles (41.57 km2) is territory and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water. The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 93.7% White, 2.0% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.6% Asian, 0.5% from other competitions, and 1.9% from two or more competitions.

There were 14,108 homeholds of which 34.8% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 52.5% were married couples living together, 9.8% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 3.6% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 34.0% were non-families.

28.4% of all homeholds were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

26.5% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 29.3% were from 25 to 44; 24.2% were from 45 to 64; and 13.1% were 65 years of age or older.

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 97.01% White, 0.60% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other competitions, and 0.84% from two or more competitions.

There were 10,458 homeholds out of which 34.5% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 31.4% were non-families.

The Swamp Fox Festival and Parade is a celebration of the past and the present, the annual Swamp Fox Festival honors Marion's namesake and Revolutionary War hero, Francis Marion, aka the Swamp Fox.
