Kalona is the second biggest city in Washington County. Amish settlement in what is now the Kalona region began in the 1840s, placing the Amish among the very first European pioneer in the area.

The Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway assembled a 66-mile branch from Iowa City to What Cheer via Kalona in 1879. Kalona was established by the barns on August 6, 1879. The name was suggested to the barns by a Mr.

Its adjacency to both Iowa City, Iowa and a large Amish settlement have allowed expansion in populace and trade in recent years.

This quaint town/city centers around the historic old town company section of Kalona, which features many small-town businesses that are prominent with tourists.

Not far from Kalona is positioned one of the biggest Amish settlements west of the Mississippi with 9 church districts and a populace of roughly 1,200 citizens .

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 98.08% White, 0.22% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other competitions, and 0.52% from two or more competitions.

There were 947 homeholds out of which 27.2% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 55.5% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families.

33.4% of all homeholds were made up of individuals and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

In the city, the populace was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a homehold in the town/city was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $45,897.

About 5.0% of families and 6.7% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 7.6% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
