Indianola was established in 1849 as the governmental center of county of Warren County.

Indianola is positioned at 41 21 42 N 93 33 47 W (41.361756, -93.562987). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 11.25 square miles (29.14 km2), all of it land. In 2005, a special census was conducted that revised Indianola's populace to 14,156. The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 96.9% White, 0.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.3% from other competitions, and 1.3% from two or more competitions.

There were 5,477 homeholds of which 33.8% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 3.6% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 34.7% were non-families.

The median age in the town/city was 34.1 years.
