Founded in 1871, the town now known as "Old Ida Grove" was positioned on the north side of the river.

However, when the barns was assembled through the neighborhood in 1877 on the south side, Ida Grove was relocated there. Ida Grove was incorporated on May 31, 1878, and was titled for the county, which was titled for Mount Ida in Greece. The Ida Grove postal service contains an petroleum on linen mural, Preparation for the First County Fair in Ida Grove 1872, painted by Andrene Kauffman in 1940.

Ida Grove is positioned at 42 20 40 N 95 28 14 W (42.344394, -95.470540). It is situated on the Maple River.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.11 square miles (5.46 km2), of which, 2.10 square miles (5.44 km2) is territory and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water. There were 1,080 housing units at an average density of 514.3 per square mile (198.6/km2).
