It is the governmental center of county of Cherokee County. Cherokee was laid out as a town in 1870, and was titled for the Indian tribe. Cherokee was incorporated on April 5, 1873. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 6.45 square miles (16.71 km2), of which, 6.43 square miles (16.65 km2) is territory and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water. As of the census of 2010, there were 5,253 citizens , 2,316 homeholds, and 1,339 families residing in the city.
The populace density was 817.0 inhabitants per square mile (315.4/km2).

The Cherokee County Fair, and the Cherokee Rodeo are held in the summer. Cherokee may be the smallest town in the world to have its own symphony orchestra, the Cherokee Symphony.
