Chariton was platted in 1850. Chariton was the name of a French trader. Perkins and listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its part in the evolution of Chariton as a county seat, the Hotel Charitone is listed by the Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance as one of the most endangered sites in Iowa. The hotel is presently undergoing restoration with the majority of the hotel being converted into apartements.
According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 3.82 square miles (9.89 km2), all of it land. Chariton is positioned at the exact half way point, on US 34 Business (Chariton, IA).svg U.S.
