Avoca was established in 1869 in connection with the assembly of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad through the area. It is titled after Avoca in Ireland.

Avoca is positioned at 41 29 N 95 20 W (41.4790, -95.3373). The town/city is sited between the West Nishnabotna River and its East Branch.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.13 square miles (5.52 km2), all of it land. United States Enumeration Bureau.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,506 citizens , 662 homeholds, and 436 families residing in the city.

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 98.8% White, 0.2% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% from other competitions, and 0.6% from two or more competitions.
